Sick... and sharing

It's hump day, y'all.  Whoop whoop!  (Who else loves that Geico commercial?)

It's been a little crazy around here.  Grace is projectile vomiting and having... other tummy issues.  So we went to the doctor yesterday (even though I knew it might be viral... I just wanted to be sure it wasn't something that needed treatment), and didn't get a whole lot of clarity.  She might have a virus or she might still be having tummy troubles related to the amoxicillin she was on for her ear infection.  The doctor did think she might be having some reflux, so we're trying some Zantac for that.  Fingers crossed it helps (although she's still just as happy as could be!).  Do any of you experienced mamas have any advice - how long should I wait to see if it gets better before I bug the doctor again?

Other than that, we had a fabulous weekend with friends and family and enjoyed some lazy time at home on Saturday.

And Grace has been sleeping so well the last few weeks.  She usually takes a bottle between 6:30 and 7:30, followed by a bath and snuggles.

(sometimes Daddy and Gracie fall asleep during snuggles... and then I die of cute.)

She goes to bed around 7:30 or 8:00, and then we do a dreamfeed (where I feed her while she's still sleeping) around 9:30 or 10:00.  She can usually go until 6:00 or 6:30 the next morning until her next bottle.  Hallelujah!

And I may have already mentioned it here before, but my sister-in-law gave me the Babywise book when I found out that I was pregnant, and we have definitely found it so, so useful in developing good and consistent feeding and sleeping habits.  If you're a momma (or soon-to-be momma) and are hoping to establish at least some kind of a schedule, I can't recommend it enough.  And I know that some perceive the book as advocating a rigid schedule or promoting ignoring a baby's cry or needs, but that couldn't be farther from the truth.  It simply gave me an idea for promoting some structure, and I really needed that.

On a completely unrelated note... I never intended to become a full-blown mommy blogger.  Not only because I feel wholly unqualified to put myself out there as knowing what the heck I'm doing (because I don't), but also because this space has never just been an online scrapbook/diary to me.  It's a creative outlet and a way for me to meet some really amazing women.  So I really am trying to remember to really share here, rather than simply document.  Thanks for sticking with me while I figure it all out. :)

Warning - this will be long but I've been there.

About two weeks after Ana started daycare (she started 4 days before her 3 month birthday), she started projectile vomiting EVERYWHERE but was just as happy as could be. We called the nurse (it was a Sunday) and she gave us some tips on how to get fluids in her so she didn't dehydrate. By Tuesday, she was still vomiting every time I fed her and so I took her to the doctor. He told me she just had a cold and that some babies just spit up a lot and it was no big deal, keep feeding her like normal and she's fine, which I disagreed with but I was new and didn't know what was going on so I trusted him. I took her home, kept feeding her like normal and she kept vomiting. I took her back in on Friday but to a different doctor in the practice. That doctor said he thought it was a viral stomach bug that she probably picked up starting daycare. He said the first time little ones get viral stomach bugs, they can hang on for a long time. He seemed convinced she would get better over the weekend and said to call him if she was still getting sick by Monday (which would have been the 8th day). Monday she still got sick, but not as much and only once and by Tuesday she had stopped vomiting. She never showed signs of dehydration and never acted like she felt bad so I think he was right, but it really freaked me out. She had another "episode" like this that lasted 5 days in June 2011 and then another that lasted 3 or 4 in October 2011. Since then, she has only vomited twice and it only hung on for 24 hours. I hope she gets to feeling better but I will say, everything I've read and have been told is as long as they don't seem to feel bad and don't act different, they are probably fine.

My son had reflux when he was an infant and it kept him from nursing so we put him on Zantac early on. I totally fought it as I did not want my newborn on a steady stream of meds, but it really helped. We took him off Zantac around 6 mos of age and he did fine but then he started having ear infections back to back to back. His pedi said there was a correlation between reflux and ear infections so we put him back on the Zantac and POOF we have been ear infection free for 1 1/2 yrs now. YIPPEE!! From what I understand, most babies have reflux, but the degree to which they have it differs. If the reflux is painful for them then Zantac may be the way to go. If the reflux does not bother them then in my opinion there is no reason to give them the Zantac (unless you are having a prob with ear infections). There is no easy answer but I hope that was helpful. Best of luck to you in making the right decision. Trust your mommy intuition ;)

On another note I loved Babywise for establishing structure and routine. When it came time to help establish a good sleeping/bedtime habit I switched to Happy Baby/ Healthy Child

Ryan, I HIGHLY recommend you take Grace to a chiropractor before you put her on any more meds. HIGHLY advise it. Babies, just like adults, often have pinched nerves in their little spines (the process of being born can really get their spines out of whack!), and those pinched nerves can send faulty signals to pretty much any part of the body. Regular ear infections in infants are often caused by these pinched nerves. A chiropractic adjustment will absolutely not do her any harm, and it will almost certainly do very much good. (Plus most chiropractors take most medical insurance plans, so you should be covered there.) I suggest you ask friends and acquaintances for recommendations of a good chiropractor in your area. Hope little Grace starts feeling better soon!
